The Ghost in the Shell Gets New Anime From Science SARU

A brand-new Ghost in the Shell anime project is officially in production, with Science SARU returning to animate the iconic cyberpunk franchise.

The world of Ghost in the Shell is expanding once again.

On October 23, 2026, Bandai Namco Filmworks officially announced that a new anime project based on Masamune Shirow’s legendary cyberpunk manga Ghost in the Shell has entered production. The animation will once again be handled by Science SARU, the studio behind this year's THE GHOST IN THE SHELL television anime.

The announcement came as something of a surprise. The new project was revealed through a flyer distributed during the press preview for the OPEN HOUSE event at DOVER STREET MARKET GINZA in Tokyo, along with a new visual teasing the production.

Science SARU Returns to Ghost in the Shell

Science SARU has quickly become one of the most recognizable animation studios in the industry, with projects including DAN DA DAN, INU-OH, DEVILMAN crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and The Colors Within.

The studio also produced the 2026 television anime THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, which began broadcasting and streaming in July.

Now, rather than moving on from the franchise, Science SARU is taking on another new project based on Shirow Masamune's original work.

A New Project, But Few Details So Far

For now, the project is officially listed simply as “Ghost in the Shell” (working title).

The announcement confirms:

  • Original Work: Masamune Shirow

  • Animation Production: Science SARU

  • Status: In production

  • Title: Ghost in the Shell (working title)

However, there are still plenty of unanswered questions.

A release date, format, story details, cast and additional staff have not yet been announced. Bandai Namco Filmworks says additional information will be revealed through its official channels in the future.

Why This Announcement Matters

Ghost in the Shell is one of anime's most influential science-fiction franchises.

Masamune Shirow's original manga first appeared in 1989 and went on to inspire multiple anime productions, including Mamoru Oshii's acclaimed 1995 feature film, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Arise, SAC_2045 and the 2026 THE GHOST IN THE SHELL television series. The franchise has also expanded into games, novels and a Hollywood live-action adaptation.

That makes the announcement of yet another anime interpretation particularly significant.

And with Science SARU returning, fans can expect another project from a studio known for taking distinctive approaches to its animation and storytelling.

What's Next for Ghost in the Shell?

At the moment, fans will have to wait for more information.

The new anime is still in production, and Bandai Namco Filmworks has not revealed when it will premiere or exactly what form the project will take.

Still, one thing is already clear: Ghost in the Shell isn't going anywhere.

Following the 2026 television series, the franchise is preparing to enter another new era with Science SARU once again behind the animation.

We'll be watching for more details as they are announced.
