Kuromi is officially getting the big-screen treatment.
Sanrio announced on October 31 — Kuromi’s birthday — that the popular character will star in her first feature-length theatrical anime movie, with the film scheduled to open in Japanese theaters in 2027.
The announcement comes at a perfect time for Kuromi fans, arriving on Halloween and the character’s birthday. Sanrio has launched a new announcement visual, a special video and an official website for the upcoming movie, giving fans their first look at the project.
For now, details about the story, staff, cast and exact Japanese release date have not been revealed. Sanrio has also confirmed that information about an international release will be announced at a later date.
From My Melody’s Rival to Her Own Movie
Kuromi made her debut in 2005 as a character in Sanrio’s Onegai My Melody anime series. She was introduced as My Melody’s self-proclaimed rival, recognizable by her black hood and pink skull emblem.
Over the years, Kuromi grew far beyond her original supporting role and developed a massive fanbase of her own. Sanrio describes her as tough on the outside but surprisingly girly, with interests that include keeping a diary and reading romance novels. Her official birthday is October 31.
In 2023, Kuromi took another major step as the star of KUROMI’S PRETTY JOURNEY, an original short anime series that followed her adventures around the world. The series ran on Kuromi’s official YouTube channel and featured a story involving her search for her missing sister, Romina.
Now, Kuromi is heading somewhere she has never gone before: the theatrical big screen.
Kuromi’s Biggest Anime Adventure Yet
The movie announcement represents another major expansion for one of Sanrio’s most recognizable characters.
While Sanrio has not revealed what the movie will be about, the special announcement video promises that Kuromi’s biggest challenge yet is about to begin. Fans will have to wait for future updates to learn what kind of adventure awaits her.
And with the movie arriving in 2027, Kuromi’s growing presence across anime, music, merchandise and other entertainment projects shows just how far the character has come since her debut.
For now, there is no confirmed international theatrical date, but fans outside Japan can expect more information as the movie gets closer to release.
Kuromi’s first theatrical anime movie arrives in Japan in 2027.
Happy Birthday, Kuromi! 🖤💜
